Look who’s speaking
Discuss moving away from to some great start in a job. John Silvanus Wilson Junior. was three days into his gig as Morehouse College president as he had a call in the White-colored House: President Barack Obama was thinking about delivering the 2013 commencement address. Wilson, as you would imagine, was thinking about return. (And possibly not completely surprised before you take the Morehouse job, he headed a White-colored House initiative on in the past black schools and colleges.)
The possibilities of getting this type of big man on campus has fueled excitement about graduation. “We have 10,000 people at our commencement, which year all of individuals 10,000 seats will need a ticket,” states Elise Durham, Morehouse representative. Obama’s Morehouse appearance will mark the very first time a sitting U.S. president has shipped a commencement speech in Georgia since FDR’s 1938 talk in the College of Georgia’s summer time ceremony. (This Year First Lady Michelle Obama addressed Morehouse’s all-female counterpart, Spelman.)
At press time, schools remained as finalizing plans, but it’ll be difficult to top Morehouse for star power. In the road in Athens, UGA grads will listen to sleep issues from the partisan divide, as Senator Saxby Chambliss (type of 1966) will the honors. At Tech, a dark tone is going to be business, not politics, because of Southern Company Chief executive officer Tom Fanning, who gained bachelor’s and master’s levels in the school on North Avenue. A far more curious booking is Rita Dove, who’ll address Emory’s type of 2013. Dove is really a Pulitzer Prize-winning former U.S. poet laureate. Impressive, but Emory’s faculty includes current poet laureate Natasha Trethewey, with a Pulitzer of her very own.
