Because of the power social networking, first-person accounts in the city’s infamous September 2009 raid from the Atlanta Bald eagle on Ponce de Leon Avenue may find yourself aged within the Library of Congress. StoryCorps, the nation’s non-profit founded in 2003 and devoted to recording American dental histories, includes a studio room at Atlanta’s WABE-FM. The questionable 2009 gay bar raid through the city’s now-disbanded Red Dog Unit was carried out by 24 officials who purchased patrons to lie face lower on the ground for hrs because they carried out searches, background inspections and yelled anti-gay slurs. Last summer time, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed’s office launched a scathing 343-page independent set of the raid, disclosing that 16 officials later lied or destroyed evidence concerning the botched raid. Six APD officials were fired and nine were disciplined within the fallout in the raid.
On Wednesday, WABE reporter Jim Burress place the word on his Facebook page that StoryCorps producers wish to document tales in the incident which eventually brought towards the city having to pay out greater than a million dollars after bar patrons filed a federal suit. On his Facebook page, Burress published this to potential Bald eagle patron interviewees: “It doesn’t need to be nearly what went down that night-it may be about how exactly the night time altered you, exactly what the legal victory way to you, what role the raid will have in Atlanta’s Gay and lesbian history, etc. All interviews are maintained within the Library of Congress, and selected tales are heard weekly both within Atlanta on 90.1-FM, and across the country on NPR’s Morning Edition. If you’re a StoryCorps fan, you are aware how effective these segments could be. If you are different, the facilitators within Atlanta are glad to reply to any queries you’ve.Inches
If you would like to talk about your story with StoryCorps producers (the non-profit also shares its content on the handy iPhone application for listeners on the run), you are able to email Burress at [email protected]
Former Bald eagle bartenders Chris Lopez, who last fall filed their own federal suit from the city and 4 APD officials, declaring his constitutional legal rights were violated, also shared the StoryCorps info with Facebook buddies Wednesday.
There wasn’t any immediate word on whether former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin, who had been in control once the raid required place, has arrived at to StoryCorps producers to include her tale towards the criminal record. Around the off chance Franklin isn’t within the mood to consider a stroll lower memory lane to talk about her ideas around the situation, our recommendation to StoryCorps archivists? Find former Southern Voice reporter Matt Schafer and the trusty Music player recorded interview with herzonner. After Franklin deftly dodged reporter queries concerning the raid in ’09, Schaefer got his exclusive within the paint aisle of the house Depot on Ponce (only a couple of blocks where the raid required place) as he noticed florally decored Franklin as she shopped for wall colors.
